"The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is a short story by Edgar Allan Poe published in Graham's Magazine in 1841. It has been claimed as the first detective story; Poe referred to it as one of his "tales of ratiocination". C. Auguste Dupin is a man in Paris who solves the mysterious brutal murder of two women. Numerous witnesses heard a suspect, though no one agrees on what language was spoken. At the murder scene, Dupin finds a hair that does not appear to be human. As the first true detective in fiction, the Dupin character established many literary devices which would be used in future fictional detectives including Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot. Many later characters, for example, follow Poe's model of the brilliant detective, his personal friend who serves as narrator, and the final revelation being presented before the reasoning that leads up to it. Dupin himself reappears in "The Mystery of Marie Roget" and "The Purloined Letter".

I obtained a different version of this story to that illustrated on the Amazon.com pages, so I can only comment on the story itself rather than the product as a whole. (Also, my copy contained a single story and did not come packaged with other stories like some versions on offer on Amazon). The story is enthralling and, as one would expect from Edgar Allan Poe, extremely well written. If you enjoy Sherlock Holmes stories, you will love this. Apart from being a great read in its own right, the story is also of considerable interest as one of the first modern detective stories (possibly the first written in English). Poe's influence on later writers such as Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie is unmistakable: indeed you if you substituted Sherlock Holmes for Poe's Parisian hero, Auguste Dupin, and Watson for the narrator, the story could easily pass as a Sherlock Holmes mystery, such is the similarity in methods and personality of Dupin and Holmes. It is a short read and well worth a couple of dollars, especially if you get other Dupin stories thrown in. Bet you don't guess who did it!Product details
